Engaging Teens Online Using Live Chat:
Shifting Online Strategy Focus
Abstract
According to Teen Research Unlimited, “Teen purchasing power is
enormous. In 2006, they rang up $179 billion in sales. But they can be a
fickle demographic, helping to send sales at a retailer soaring one
season only to abandon it the next for another with fresher
merchandise.” The importance of the teenage demographic, or “teens”, to
online retailers must be recognized and acted upon for future sales
growth. As the leading demographic of Internet use and a key target
market to many online retailers, their behavior creates a big impact on
business’ marketing and communication strategies.
The growing presence of teens is something to take note of now,
understanding that they will soon represent the largest share of online
purchasing in the near future. By 2010, teens are estimated to account
for 11% of the online buying population, making them critical to
consider when calculating online shopping penetration. As online
marketing strategies shifts from customer acquisition to customer
retention, it is crucial and beneficial to establish relationships with
teens now.
